World Art Dubai Celebrates Japanese Culture in its 10th Edition
From May 2 to 5, Dubai witnessed a vibrant celebration of Japanese culture at the 10th edition of World Art Dubai (WAD). With over 250 captivating works by more than 50 Japanese artists, the event served as a platform to foster stronger ties between Japan and the UAE in the realm of art.
As the region’s premier contemporary art exhibition, WAD showcased a diverse array of over 4,000 artworks from 65 artists hailing from various corners of the globe. This year’s edition unfolded against the backdrop of the iconic World Trade Center, drawing art enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.
A highlight of the event was the Japanese artists hall, an integral component of Japan Promotion’s visionary ‘Japan Tide’ project initiated in 2017. This initiative aims to introduce Japanese artists to Middle Eastern audiences, facilitating their journey towards global recognition.
The event welcomed Japanese artists spanning multiple artistic disciplines, including drawing, kimono making, ceramics, and beyond. Among them, the renowned Japanese artist Masao Hatayama returned to World Art Dubai, captivating audiences with his dynamic pop art drawings. Hatayama’s live art performance on WAD’s main stage mesmerized spectators as he skillfully interwove Dubai’s landscapes with Japanese motifs, infusing his signature vibrant style.
“I draw inspiration from manga and anime, blending them with the traditional Japanese art style of ukiyo-e,” shared Hatayama in an interview with Arab News Japan. His global journey since 2017 has seen his art garner acclaim worldwide, with WAD proving to be no exception. Reflecting on his experience in Dubai, Hatayama expressed his fondness for the city’s diverse cultural tapestry, which fosters creative exchange and appreciation.
Adding to the cultural tapestry, the esteemed kimono brand KIMONO RINGO made its debut at World Art Dubai, unveiling its exquisite indigo-dyed kimonos. Presenting a contemporary twist on traditional attire, the brand showcased its unique craftsmanship, rooted in the art of indigo drying. “Our kimonos transcend seasons, embodying our rich cultural heritage. The distinctive dying technique renders each piece a true work of art,” shared the brand’s artisans with Arab News Japan.
Complementing the visual feast, WAD’s stages came alive with captivating performances by Japanese artists. From mesmerizing calligraphy displays by YUI and Airi Hara to the evocative cherry blossom paintings by Mari Nishimura, attendees were treated to a sensory journey through Japanese artistic traditions.
World Art Dubai’s 10th edition not only served as a vibrant convergence of artistic expression but also as a testament to the enduring bond between Japan and the UAE, uniting cultures through the universal language of art.
